SUCCESS STORIES

JOAQUIN E. DIAZDeLEON

Present Life

Joaquin E. DiazDeLeon is an accomplished Latin American man who at 22 years old has defeated drug addiction, childhood abuse, gang association, imprisonment, and many incredible challenges. Now attending college and working with lawyers, policy makers, and non-profit directors for the greater purpose of public safety, Joaquin has become an icon and voice for much needed restorative justice within California’s juvenile justice system, having appearances in national and local newspapers, T.V. news, and radio broadcast. Not limited to visiting local and state juvenile detention centers, acting in the capacity of mentorship to our youth. I attended Project IMPACT during my stay in CYA and the tools I gained from the weekly workshops have made my transition to the community much easier.

Early Life

At age 4 Joaquin, had already been exposed to violence from his biological father and seen such domestic violence in his home that by the tender age of 13 Joaquin secluded himself to marijuana and alcohol. Many disadvantages paraded his household of poverty, lacking opportunity and education stemming from immigrant parents. Joaquin continued in his own demise and soon become entrenched in the juvenile justice system, having received a stern hand from his county of charge he was soon detained from a court hearing and began a life institutionalized to county and state juvenile detention centers throughout CA. Joaquin became fully involved with gang activity and acted on violence based on self hatred. Upon his stay in the California Youth Authority Joaquin, made a decision to be a leader and not a follower. His courage and faith led him to successfully exiting C.Y.A. and soon after sealing all records to any juvenile delinquency ties.

Reason Being

Joaquin E. DiazDeLeon, meets all interest and qualifications as a juvenile justice expert. He has managed to understand his past issues and realized as most misguided youth; the missing link in their lives is simply a lack of value found in an organic family bond. Principles of love and grace have allowed Joaquin to emerge from a death style of drugs, gangs, and unhealthy relationships. He proactively implements his expertise within juvenile halls, communities and Government meetings.

KEVIN TRAN

My name is Kevin Tran; otherwise known as Phu Tran. I was incarcerated in the California Youth Authority for six years. During my last year, I attended the Project IMPACT program. I gained so much from this program in terms of how to become a better person and how to think positive. This program helped prepare me to make a smooth transition back into the community.

Since returning back to the community, I have completed my Associate Degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis in Business Technology at Golden West College. I am currently attending California State University of Fullerton to Complete My Bachelor Degree with a major in finance. With my experience, I hope to reach out and assist people who society has tossed aside for whatever reasons it might be.
