Incarcerated Men Putting Away Childish Things

Women Incarcerated Still Enduring

KEVIN HAGAN

Kevin Hagan is a 51-year-old native Californian born in Los Angeles but raised primarily in Orange County by his single mother. Although his parents were legally married, his absentee father was a negative influence in his life subjecting him to domestic violence, alcohol abuse, and overall bad parenting skills.

Kevin was an excellent athlete and started playing Pop Warner Football at the age of seven years old. He continued his love and thirst for football throughout his educational years while playing as a running back for his high school and college teams. In high school he was a three-letter athlete in Track and Field, Football and Wrestling. In college, he was a two-letter athlete in Football and Track.

In 1979, his love for the water and a desire to see the world convinced him to join the U. S. Navy where was a hospital corpsman. He was honorably discharged in 1981.

Kevin’s low self-esteem and disappointment with himself for his unsuccessful attempt at professional football paved the way for his next move. He became involved in a fast paced lifestyle that led him to drugs and eventually a crime that took the life of another individual where he was incarcerated for almost 28 years of his life.

During his incarceration, Kevin realized that he needed to spend time reflecting on life and himself to correct the low self-esteem issues and disappointment he was dealing with from not continuing his football aspirations. He immersed himself into numerous self-help, anti-violence, and juvenile diversion programs including Self Confrontation (Biblical Counseling Foundation), Straight Life (a juvenile diversion program at Deuel Vocational Institution), S.Q.U.I.R.E.S. (San Quentin Utilization of Inmate Resources), V.O.E.G. (Violent Offenders Educational Group), Brother’s Keeper (Certified Rape Crisis Suicide Counselor), I.M.P.A.C.T. (Incarcerated Men Putting Away Childish Things), Kairos (A spiritual enrichment program), V.I.G. (Veterans Issues Group), Ministry of Consolation (Bereavement Counseling) and School of Pastoral Leadership for San Francisco Archdiocese and numerous others.

Kevin is totally committed to mentoring the youth of today with the hope of changing negative behavior and encouraging a positive and meaningful lifestyle. He is intent upon listening to them and showing them that someone does care. He tries to teach them that they should never give up the fight to seek knowledge, to make a better life for themselves and that they can accomplish anything they put their minds to doing. His life is a testament to success.
