Incarcerated Men Putting Away Childish Things

Women Incarcerated Still Enduring

JESSIE REED

My name is Jessie Reed and I am a minister and singer of the gospel of Jesus Christ. My testimony is much deeper then the time I have to write this Bio. I was born December 17, 1959 in Texarkana Ark at Miller Hospital. Came to California at the age of nine (9). I grew up between Emeryville and Oakland CA. I am the oldest of ten (10) children five boys and five girls. I went to Laney College after I graduated from Emery High School. I played football at both schools winning a number of awards for my athletic abilities. Graduated from Patten University in June 2002. I also grew up in the Church a Pastors kid.

My Mother a Pastor and Father Willie Parks a Minister, the only father I knew, not my biological father, but was the man who raised me giving me a spiritual foundation on which I would later in life begin to build upon. In 1984 after becoming a minor drug dealer and consumer of those drugs, I committed a crime in which I was sentenced to 27 years to Life. I spent 24 ½ years in prison. I was released June 11 of 2009. During this time in prison I came into a relationship with God for myself guided by the man who would become his greatest mentor and father figure after Willie Parks and that man was Chaplain Earl Smith Sr. The writer of Romans Paul said, “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you might prove what is good and acceptable and profit will of God”. (Romans 12:1-2)

I begin to think in a new way and through a number of classes and studies I became a Licensed Minister of the Gospel. I am presently enrolled at the Golden Gate Theological Seminary in Mill Valley. Finished my last class December 12 2009 I’ll graduate in May 2010 with a CLD (Contextual Leadership Development) diploma. However, because my thinking changed I begin to enroll in many self help classes seeking change, however the most rewarding classes I enrolled in why’ll incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison was I.M.P.A.C.T. (Incarcerated Men Putting Away Childish Things). I was handed the tools to become a better thinker thereby becoming a better man.

My passion today is to help young men who may be suffering from the same deficiencies as I did, Low self-esteem, depression; lack of positive role model or influences in life. It is my job today to equip young men with the tools needed to rebuild or build their self-esteem and to introduce them to a positive mentoring letting them know that if I can make it so can they. I want to give back to the world. We are living in pearliest times, my platform is simple, and “YOU CAN MAKE IT”. “I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Graduate of Patten University, I.M.P.A.C.T., Self Confrontation Counseling, Golden Gate Theological Seminary, No More Tears victim program, Breaking Barriers in Solano State Prison. A voice and guest speaker of the San Francisco Healing Circle, were the members are all survivors of violent crimes bi- weekly. A guest speaker at the (Men of Valor Academy) in Oakland Ca. A member of the SQUIRES Youth Program; a lead Singer and Song writer in the Gospel Group Redemption, and a Licensed Minister. Today I am proud to be a member of the I.M.P.A.C.T. Team, working to change our communities by working to change the mine set of young men who are at risk.
